A Distant Shore Book Review

Book Description

He never dreamed he’d see her again.

She was a child caught in a riptide in the Caribbean Sea. He was a teenager from the East Coast on vacation with his family. He dove in to save her, and that single terrifying moment changed both their lives forever.

Ten years later, Jack Ryder is a daring undercover agent with the FBI and Eliza Lawrence still lives on that pristine island. She’s an untainted princess in a kingdom of darkness and evil, on the brink of a forced marriage with a dangerous neighboring drug lord, a union arranged by her father.

This time when Jack and Eliza meet, there’s a connection neither of them can explain. Both their lives are on the line, and once again, the stakes are deadly high. Can they join forces in a complicated and dangerous mission, pretending to share a breathtaking love, without really falling for each other?

Sometimes miracles happen not once but twice…along a distant shore.

My Thoughts

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did! Karen Kingsbury’s stories are always filled to the brim with emotion, tugging on my heartstrings all the way through. This book is no exception, yet it is different from what she normally writes as the subject of sex trafficking is the prominent theme.

At first, it seemed as though any type of connection between Jack and Eliza would be difficult to achieve as they both have deep emotional scars that they have hidden for much of their lives. I was so relieved that Eliza did not just rush into her rescuer’s arms and they lived happily ever after. No, there was a lot of healing and trust that needed to occur first before they could pursue their attraction to each other, and believe me…there’s no question about their chemistry!

If you have the opportunity to listen to the audiobook version rather than reading it in print, I highly recommend it! There are two different narrators – one male, one female – each telling the story from Jack and Eliza’s point of view. In my opinion, it really helped to flesh out their connection to each other. It’s also the first time I’ve listened to an audiobook with this format, and I wish more books featured it!

Fans of Karen Kingsbury should love this newest release from her, but I caution anyone that may be uncomfortable with the subject line as it is difficult to read for some audiences.
