Review Rewind – The Colonel’s Lady by Laura Frantz

About the book: Laura Frantz’s The Colonel’s Lady is historical fiction at it’s best, capturing readers with a powerful story of love, a search for the truth and, finally, forgiveness. It’s 1779 when Roxanna arrives from Virginia to the Kentucky fort commanded by Colonel Cassius McLinn. Told that her officer father has died, Roxanna suddenly finds herself penniless and destitute and is forced to take her father’s place as the fort’s scrivener. It soon becomes clear that Cassius is attracted to her, but she realizes the colonel has secrets of his own, some of which have to do with her father’s sudden death. Can Roxanne ever love Cassius as long as the…

    Millie’s Treasure Book Review

I hardly know where to begin in describing how much I LOVED this book! I’ve read a lot of books by Kathleen over the years, and by far, this has been my favorite one. I may be a little biased because the majority of the story takes place in my (nearby) hometown of Memphis, TN, but the story itself stands on its own merits regardless of the setting. So, if you don’t know anything about Memphis history, a lot of the landmarks, streets, and descriptions will not mean much to you. However, after living here almost my entire life, I had no trouble visualizing every bit of it. Adams Avenue…

A Battle Worth Fighting Book Review

A wonderful split time novel that kept me engrossed from start to finish! The modern day story centers around Sahara and a fight to keep her marriage intact.  Her road is certainly not an easy one, and her attempts to make her husband notice her seem to fall flat at every turn.  But bless him, her husband is a genuine lover of poetry and nature and beauty, and once she realizes that in a newer, deeper way, nothing can stop them. The historic story features Sahara’s ancestor who was brave enough to fight in the Civil War – as a woman soldier!  Forgive my naivete, but I genuinely had NO…

    In This Moment Book Review

There is literally no good way to start a review for this book.  Like every other reviewer, I am struggling to even come up with adequate words to describe my experience with In This Moment in such a way that would convince someone else to read it.  Simply put – it is amazing! Unless I’m mistaken, there’s been very few time travel stories written within the Christian fiction genre.  (Maybe they are actually out there, and I’m just unaware.)   I feel like Gabrielle has hit an untapped market of readers by merging time travel and faith together into her Timeless series.  The combination of these two elements has provided me with…

    The Metropolitan Affair Book Review

My expectations were probably higher than they should have been when I started reading this book. So many of my reader friends have raved over it, and with good reason. But for me, I struggled to make it through the first 2/3rds of the story. There were several moments that could have been tightened up to make it a shorter, more engaging novel. I got bogged down by a huge cast of characters, all connected in some way to the Met or the forgeries that were being investigated. I did successfully guess the main culprit, and once I did, the time it took for Joe and Lauren to figure it…

The Maid of Ballymacool Book Review

WOW!  If this book is not on your TBR shelf for this year, then you need to carve out a space for it, and then waste no time reading it from cover to cover.  Fans of historical fiction stories that include a slow burn romance and a Cinderella retelling will love every moment of this Irish tale.  You will root for Brianna as she slowly starts to see what her life could be like with such a dashing hero like Michael.  You will loathe the headmistress, Mistress Magee, and find a kindred spirit in Brianna’s friend, Finnuala. If your reading adventure through this story is anything like mine, you’ll find…

Mrs. Witherspoon Goes to War Book Review

If you’re looking for more of the lesser told stories from World War II, then this series – Heroines of WWII – from Barbour is a must read.  I have learned so much so far, and I still have several more books to go! My latest read was Mrs. Witherspoon Goes to War.  From the start, I’ll say that I was disappointed to discover that Peggy Witherspoon was not a real individual, but her WASP status and training described many ladies during the war.  This story seemed to focus more on the interactions between her and two other WASPs and their efforts to make women more recognized as a helpful…
