When Twilight Breaks Book Review
Book Description
Evelyn Brand is an American foreign correspondent determined to prove her worth in a male-dominated profession and to expose the growing tyranny in Nazi Germany. To do so, she must walk a thin line. If she offends the government, she could be expelled from the country—or worse. If she does not report truthfully, she’ll betray the oppressed and fail to wake up the folks back home.
Peter Lang is an American graduate student working on his PhD in German. Disillusioned with the chaos in the world due to the Great Depression, he is impressed with the prosperity and order of German society. But when the brutality of the regime hits close, he discovers a far better way to use his contacts within the Nazi party—to feed information to the shrewd reporter he can’t get off his mind.
As the world marches relentlessly toward war, Evelyn and Peter are on a collision course with destiny.
My Thoughts
2021 is having a banner year with new Christian historical fiction releases, and I can proudly add the newest novel from Sarah Sundin to this list! Having never read a single book by her before (gasp!), I had no idea what to expect other than knowing she is in a league of her own when it comes to WW2 fiction. Needless to say, I have some catching up to on a certain backlist…
When Twilight Breaks is a mesmerizing tale set in pre-WW2 Munich, Germany. Through this lens, we are able to see all the events that lead up to the deadliest war in our history. We witness a power hungry dictator alongside thousands of innocent Jews as their freedoms are slowly stripped away. Against that backdrop is Evelyn and Peter’s story – one that I could not get enough of. She is fiercely independent, wanting no man to cage her free spirit. Peter allows her to flourish and helps her in ways no one else can.
I could not help but see the juxtaposition of this story to our present society. In a world currently filled with cancel culture, the phrase “Learn from history or you’re doomed to repeat it” has never held more meaning. I wholeheartedly applaud this author for holding nothing back, showing us that hatred only brings chaos. I encourage all readers of historical fiction, Christian or not, to read this captivating story.
