Jesus Revolution Movie Review PLUS Giveaway
Just in time for its digital release, I had the opportunity to see Jesus Revolution. I had planned to see it while it was in theaters, but time got away from me and I knew I’d have to wait until it was released on DVD. After finally watching it, Jesus Revolution was all that I expected and then some. 🙂
To be honest, I had very little knowledge of this movement and Calvary Chapel when I started watching. I just knew it was a pivotal moment in Christian history when there were so many new individuals coming to know Christ as their Savior. Just that info alone made me eager to learn more and see the movie.
The cast of characters was excellent! Kelsey Grammer played his role to a T, and there were numerous times when it seemed like he was trying to hold back the tears. Even he knew that what had happened years ago in this church and in the lives of these new believers was something special. I have seen several interviews from him since the movie was released, and even then, he was emotional. I don’t blame him! ♥ I also really enjoyed seeing Jonathan Roumie in his role as Lonnie Frisbee. I’ve only scratched the surface of watching him in The Chosen, but now I’m ready for more of that, too.
My favorite moment of the movie was a line from Kay, Chuck’s wife. I don’t remember it word for word, but it was about how truth has to work harder to drown out the lies. Those who are telling lies have to speak louder. I found that to be 100% in our current society where we’re being told what to believe, who to support, who to cancel, etc. All it takes is 5 minutes of mainstream internet searching, and we all see a world that’s vastly different now than it was when this movie was made. Yes, they had a whole different set of circumstances then with the mainstream culture, but Christians have to be salt and light just as much now as they did when the Jesus movement was gaining ground.
I also liked that they didn’t shy away from showing how Lonnie tried to take the Jesus movement and turn it into something different. Chuck’s character seemed to be emphasizing that their sole mission was to draw people to Christ so they could be saved. About halfway through, Lonnie’s intentions veered into miracles and his belief that the Holy Spirit wanted to work through him in a different way. Having been raised in the Charasmatic movement, I started to get worried how the rest of the movie would proceed, and if it had continued in that vein, I probably would’ve turned it off. Personally, I have dealt with a lot of soul-searching over the years about how much of what I have seen is true and how much is just for show. It’s a fine line because while I believe that God can and still does perform miracles, there are too many bad actors that are looking to capitalize on people’s gullibility. In Jesus Revolution and in real life, Chuck was able to amicably part ways with Lonnie.
If you are even the least bit curious in one of Christianity’s most pivotal moments, I would encourage you to give Jesus Revolution a try! The production value was incredible, and the message was one that is missing from nearly all of what comes out of Hollywood these days. I’m so glad to have seen it!

I’ve not seen the movie, but I came to faith in the 70’s in Southern California, where it cost me to become a believer. I remember the radical Jesus Revolution being very counter-cultural amid the drugs and hippie’s free love movement there, and how with a sense of awe the Jesus Revolution resonated with my new relationship with Christ.

Wow!! What a testimony, Jill! I can’t imagine growing up during that era, but there’s certainly a lot of similarities to present day.
