The Mistress of Tall Acre Book Review

Book Description

The American Revolution is finally over, and Sophie Menzies is starved for good news. When her nearest neighbor, General Seamus Ogilvy, finally comes home to Tall Acre, she hopes it is a sign of better days to come. But the general is now a widower with a small daughter in desperate need of a mother. Nearly destitute, Sophie agrees to marry Seamus and become the mistress of Tall Acre in what seems a safe, sensible arrangement. But when a woman from the general’s past returns without warning, the ties that bind this fledgling family together will be strained to the utmost. When all is said and done, who will be the rightful mistress of Tall Acre?

Triumph and tragedy, loyalty and betrayal–you will find it all in the rich pages of this newest novel from the talented pen of Laura Frantz.

My Thoughts

Laura Frantz has yet to disappoint me with any of her sweeping novels. From the very first page, I knew this book would be a special one, and I was right. She transported me to the fragile beginnings of the United States after the Revolutionary War into a beautiful tale of love, loss, and childlike trust.

Sophie’s character was one that I could relate to immediately – independent, fiercely loyal, and quick to love. Her relationship with Lily Cate was sweet as it could be, and it blossomed the more time they spent together. Seamus took some time to warm up to, rightfully so. His time spent as a general for 8 years left him rough around the edges. When he comes home from the war thrust into a fatherly role, he’s like a ship without a sail. His and Sophie’s need for each other is evident from their very first meeting.

I always say that I don’t know how Laura can top each book with whatever she has next, but this book has 100% placed itself as my favorite of hers! I wanted it to go on and on – well, forever. There were moments when I had to stop myself from reading ahead on the page because I was so eager to see what would happen. Instead, waiting and savoring every word was worth its weight in gold. Each sentence is so richly constructed that you can feel every emotion and visualize every moment.

I would say “I can’t wait to see what she will write next,” but I almost don’t want to! I want to enjoy this book for the masterpiece that it is. 🙂

My favorite segment…

“We thank Thee, Lord, for happy hearts, for rain and sunny weather. We thank Thee, Lord, for this our food, and that we are together. Amen.”

Jewelry Inspired by this Book

After reading the interactions between Sophie and Seamus just before their wedding, I knew exactly the necklace that I wanted to make that was inspired by their special day. I hope you enjoy it, too!
